With the year drawing to a close, Google has released its “Year in Search” report. The document shows some significant trends that paint a picture of 2021 — and give us a glimpse into 2022.

1. New Experiences & a Sense of Purpose
Searches for “fancy restaurant near me” and “wedding dress shops near me” increased 100% and 50% respectively, compared to 2020.
This points to an increased openness to new experiences as well as a quest for purpose.
2. Online Socialization
Out of necessity, people had to familiarize themselves with new forms of online socialization during 2021.
For example, searches for “games with friends” and queries that include “how to host a meeting” increased by 70% and 80% respectively.
3. A Focus on Health
Perhaps predictably, 2021 also brought a focus on health. Over the last few months, people around the world became interested in supplements as an uncomplicated way to boost their wellbeing.
Trends in Google searches bear this out with a 70% increase of queries for “Best time to take vitamins.”
4. Willingness to Learn
The pandemic has forced everyone to spend more time than usual with themselves. It seems that in many cases, this period of self-reflection has spurred a desire to learn.
Searches for “painting for beginners” increased 50% compared to the previous years, while searches for “how to invest” increased 60%.
5. Looking Inward… in More Than One Sense
The self-reflection described above led many to look inward. But in addition to paying attention to their goals and expectations, this also meant taking a look at the spaces they inhabit.
Searches for “yard landscaping ideas” increased 100%, while searches for “budget small bathroom ideas” increased an astounding 400%.
